QOTD: Necessary not Sufficient

Do the damn work.

Working in individual psychotherapy is such a gift.

I love pacing with people and leading them to a truer expression of themselves. It’s so much fun… sometimes. Other times, it can be frustrating. There are sessions when the light bulb moment happens. I can see people see the problem clearly. And when they do, we lay out possible solutions and agree to a plan. Then, crickets! There’s no follow through.

As human beings, our patterns of behavior can be really difficult to change. Often, we’re one too many wants away from making necessary changes. Like, we want to want to do this thing or change that thing, but we don’t really want to—we don’t want to more than we want to stay comfortable; even in our own mess. That’s when we don’t do a damn thing.

The key is to get honest with yourself.

Do you want to dive into the solution or do you simply want to keep talking about the problem?

Spoiler alert: Change doesn’t happen by talking about the problem.

To go forward, you’ve got to get moving on to solutions.
